"I noticed when I was dancing today how much my soul needed what you were creating in the space. And I'm feeling very grateful. As I so need spaces for connection with my body and with others in the raw humanity of the joy of movement. And so I'm moved to offer my heartfelt appreciation for your service. It will live on in my memory as one of the first times I engaged in such body connecting joyful movement outside of an alcohol environment."  dancer anon

"I have been coming to Sarena's Sunday morning 5Rhythms class for many years and I absolutely love it. It is liberating, restorative, grounding, a safe space where I come home to myself and connect deeply with others. And it is all these things because Sarena holds the space so beautifully, with humility, honesty, authenticity, wisdom, warmth and compassion. And of course some great music!"

This is a block of Saturday mornings on zoom - we will move and write. No need to have experience in writing or movement, it is a practise where we get to know our inner world in a different way. Broken Things ... or ... Living Closer to the Dreaming

I like the broken things in my garden and lodge. The drum on the wall of the lodge that is split right through the middle. The broken clay pot amongst the ferns. The wooden guinea fowl without a head on the step - from the time my sister died. These are reminders of my path and of how my life has meandered. Full of hurt, flaws, joys and cracks. As if time and nature knew how to be with each, inside and outside. Both garden benches have flaky paint, maybe an indication of my lazy streak. The wheelbarrow has a wheel that refuses to turn, but overflows with greenery. The crazy willow frame around the flowerbed cracked from dryness at the corners. The pottery circle of friends with missing arms. Blue pots without lids on a forgotten side table that made its way out of the house.

Autumn calls my attention with yellowing leaves and ripening pumpkins. I feel my unwillingness and slackness, how I drag my feet to embrace the new season, a new way of being.

I have a question, a slither of a dream that is around. Because I love what I do and offer. To create a different world, to support transition, to bring together and allow falling in love with ourselves.

Would you be interested in working in a small group, in person or online. Unfolding themes from your life, dreams that often are forgotten when a busy morning arrive, or a difficult issue that churns in your belly. How would it be to explore in movement and words, on your own and one to one with me. Being witnessed and witnessing, because we all learn from each other. Working with music and drawing, perhaps writing – underpinned by our movement practise and inspired by the present moment. Living closer to the Dreaming…

Let me know if you want to dive in and find your unique strokes. A group of 6-9 people, willing souls that will gather for 3 hours of 4 sessions over 4 months. Would you perfer online or in person and what day of the week or time of day? Any other questions?

Our first in person block of 4 sessions 25 Oct - 15 Nov - 20 Dec - 17 Jan. £55 per session. This one is fully booked.

Online dates to follow soon, with another in person block.

the ability to make a good beginning is also an art form

- david whyte

It will be a day of articulating our creative soul in noticing and moving ‘beginning’. Reflecting on a how we begin, be it a year, a relationship, a period in our life, a sentence or a dance. Being lead by the dance and the pen noticing what shape a new beginning might take. Journeying and journalling across the page and the wooden floor, accessing spaces inside us - often not readily available in everyday life.

We start at 11am and finish 4:30pm.

Venue: Lifecare Centre, Edinburgh

Cost: £80 with a non-refundable deposit of £20 to secure your spot.

Earlybird rate of £75 till 20 Dec

A bit about my writing experience. I have an Hons degree in literature, taught languages in secondary school, published poetry in my twenties in my mother tongue, Afrikaans, and was a publisher supporting authors of non-fiction writing between 1982 till 2022. Did I say I wrote and produced a play as a student on feminism, using movement and music? And I co-authored a chapter in The Oxford Handbook of Dance and Well-being. Now I am a journal writer and dancer exploring my process and struggles every morning with writing and movement as my tools and Processwork my method. I run regular online experiential sessions Move & Write on Saturday mornings.

GROW

"as humans, we are the only species on earth capable of denying our own flowering"

-david whyte-

in life we are faced with many obstacles and opportunities that can be catalysts on this heart-breaking and heart-opening path of being human; beauty and terror, grief and grace, hope and despair, belonging and banishment. can each of these circumstances be compost for the fuel that enables our growth? do you and i have a choice in how we meet each moment, receiving and releasing the wonders and wounds of our dancing journey?

to receive is to grow our capacity to acknowledge and express the gifts you have been given, to yourself and to the world. to release is to grow our capacity to be with and embrace the wounds you have suffered, for yourself and for the world. may everything we encounter be a gateway to how you and i choose to cultivate; we can grow numb or grow aliveness, grow division or connection, grow presence or aloofness, grow compassion or apathy, grow kindness or cruelty.

using the practice of soul motion as our ground, let’s repair our roots through the rituals of movement and pause, extend our reach through witnessing and being seen, rest in repose through sound and silence, including the excluded parts of ourselves and this community that comes together to GROW.
